Australia vs Sri Lanka: Defending champions Australia will take on Sri Lanka in the 20thmatch of the ICC World Cup 2019, at The Oval. With 3 wins out of 4 games, Australia will look to solidify their position in the tournament and occupy the top spot by clinching a victory over the Lankans. On the contrary, Sri Lanka have had one of the most disappointing seasons to date. It looks like even luck isn’t in their favour as two of their matches got washed out due to incessant rains.
THE STORY SO FAR…
Sri Lanka, led by Dimuth Karunaratne could only manage to play 2 games out of 4 matches and were only able to register a victory against Afghanistan, who are currently at the bottom of the points table. A win against Australia will certainly put them back on track and will skyrocket their confidence. However, that isn’t as easy as expected. Sri Lanka have a daunting task ahead if they are looking to go after the Kangaroo nation.
Australia, on the other hand, have had a solid start to their tournament. Though they lost the match against the title-favourites India, they had come back to form in style in their next fixture against Pakistan. The Aaron Finch-led team will look to take the early advantage in the tournament and seal the top spot. The 5-time world cup champions will be eyeing to make it a perfect-6 this time and will leave no stone unturned to retain the trophy.
The Lankans will be playing a game after a gap of 11 days, as they last played their match on June 4th. Though they have been out-of-action for a good 1.5 weeks, they will look to give it all in this game to emerge victorious against a formidable Australia. Their previous two games did not see them perform to their best level and they shall, in all probability, look to make a strong comeback. Australia, on the other hand, will look to maintain their guard and continue their winning ways.

HEAD-TO-HEAD
Australia and Sri Lanka have played 96 games so far, with the Aussies winning more than 60% games, with 60 wins while Sri Lanka managed to win 32. The last four years saw the two teams clash with each other 5 times and the Aussies yet again take a massive lead with 4 wins, with Lankans winning just 1.
The World Cup fixtures also see a similar trend. Both the teams have met each other 9 times in the world cup, with the mighty Aussies yet again taking a mighty lead with 7 wins and Lankans with 1 win, while the rain-god takes one game. Going by the stats, things are certainly not in favour of The Lions.
WEATHER REPORT
England’s weather has been a major cause of worry for the players and fans alike. 4 out of the 20 games to be played have been abandoned due to fierce rains. Yet another time, the weather is expected to wreck the possibilities of a good game. The forecast reports heavy downpour staring 11 AM through 7 PM in the evening. This news may be more troublesome to Sri Lanka than to Australia, considering two of Sri Lanka’s games have already been washed out.
Rains are expected to be very violent through its course. The morning will open to a sun shining bright in the sky, soon to be clad in thick clouds. If the game is indeed played, the atmosphere will make up for great conditions for the players, with temperatures hovering around 16 to 18 degrees Celsius mark. The humidity is expected to reach 60 per cent.
PITCH REPORT
The track at The Oval has seemed to be a neutral one; the pitch has majorly aided the batsmen with bursts of support to the bowlers, which changed the course of the matches played at the venue. New Zealand struggled to chase a mere total of 245 in its match against Bangladesh. However, one pattern that the teams can learn from the previous games is that it has favoured the team batting first. Three out of the four matches were won by the team batting first. Hence, it will be a safer option for the team winning the toss, to opt to bat first and not risk chasing. To add to the batsmen’s woes, the pitch is expected to slow down as the match progresses.
PLAYING COMBINATIONS
SRI LANKA
Critics ridiculed the Sri Lankan team selection committee, for its poor choice of players, considering the England pitches. However, the team did show maturity in the two games it played. One change expected in the playing eleven for the Lankan team may be the inclusion of the fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep in the playing eleven. Pradeep had been on the bench, owing to the injury to his bowling arm ahead of the game against Bangladesh. However, news from the dressing room is that he is fit to play the next game. Fierce pacer, Lasith Malinga, is back from his mother-in-law’s funeral and will be part of the playing team.
The team will look at Suranga Lakmal to finally deliver in this crucial game. Having been wicketless in the first two games, there will be a lot of pressure on Lakmal to bounce back into form. Kusal Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva and Angelo Mathews’ performance will be vital to their side. They will have to find their momentum to steal this game from Australia. Kusal Perera and Karunaratne will need to some power hitting to help the Lankan team out a decent score on the board.
PROBABLE XI: Dimuth Karunaratne (c), Kusal Perera (wk), Lahiru Thirimanne, Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews, Dhananjaya de Silva, Thisara Perera, Jeevan Mendis/Nuwan Pradeep, Isuru Udana, Suranga Lakmal, Lasith Malinga.
AUSTRALIA
The Aussies will be making minimal changes to their side as they would not want to disturb the dynamics of the team, which has been performing consistently. With Marcus Stoinis unlikely to be fit for the game, Shaun Marsh will take reins in the playing XI. Aaron Finch will look to play a pacer in the match, considering the nature of the pitch and Kane Richardson might be called in, to replace Adam Zampa. David Warner has been exceptionally followed by captain Aaron Finch. Steve Smith will look to redeem himself in this match by giving the team a steady run-stand. Maxwell again looks dangerous but is yet to score big for the team. The bowling will be led by the deadly duo Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins.
PROBABLE XI: Aaron Finch (c), David Warner, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Shaun Marsh, Usman Khawaja, Alex Carey (wk), Nathan Coulter-Nile, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Kane Richardson/Adam Zampa
