Andre Russell, Chris Gayle, Evin Lewis In, Pollard Misses Out | West Indies ICC World Cup Squad 2019

West Indies Squad ICC World Cup 2019
West Indies Squad: From a scare of missing out on a World Cup qualification to being a team to watch out for, the Windies have certainly come a long way. The sheen of their illustrious beginning to limited overs cricket was taken off after dismal displays & disputes with the board in recent years. However, since the issues between the board members & the players has settled down to a calming alliance, cricketing decisions seem to have taken a positive swivel. In February, the Caribbean unit drew a hard-fought series against the World No.1 English side. The might just bundle out for a small total or they might just score 400 on their day. Going by their unpredictable nature, they are likely to create plenty of excitement in the tournament. How far will they go?

RUSSELL MUSCLE IS BACK

There’s no better striker than Andre Russell in world cricket at the moment. That’s as unanimous as a decision can get. The 29-year-old Jamaican is in the form of his life & a fit Russell is like one of those Game of Thrones dragons. He can take down an entire team on his own. In the IPL season so far, the smashing all-rounder has scored 392 runs at 65.33. His strike-rate a mind-boggling 217.77. He’s made six-hitting an absolute joke. But, in the 50-over format, his fitness & his temperament will be tested. Can he keep himself fit for the World Cup 2019? Can he sustain the entire 50 overs?
Andre Russell last played an ODI in July 2018. After facing a year’s ban in 2017.

POLLARD MISSES OUT

Kieron Pollard has been in destructive form this IPL season but he’s been overlooked for the mega event. Andre Russell and Pollard play similar roles but if it’s between these two marauders, Russell had to be the first choice. Pollard last played an ODI in the yeat 2016. He hadn’t ruled out a possibility of making it to the Windies XI & the 83 he smashed against KXIP was a testament to his abilities in the short formats.

CHRIS GAYLE CAN BE THE GAME CHANGER

Chris Gayle isn’t the swiftest on the field but his striking prowess can’t be questioned whatsoever. He smashed the English bowlers out of the park a month back and has continued his form in the IPL as well. Gayle has scored 424 runs in the 5 ODIs he’s played this year & has already amassed 444 runs at almost 50. Evin Lewis is all set to partner the big-hitting Jamaican. Lewis’ last innings in England was a massive 176* at the Oval in 2017. Can Gayle & Lewis get West Indies to decent starts?
CHRIS GAYLE IN ENGLAND – Matches: 30, Runs: 1016, Average: 39.07, Highest Score: 132*

SHIMRON HETMEYER & OSHANE THOMAS – THE YOUNG GUNS

Both Hetmeyer & Oshane Thomas are 22 & are the players to watch out for. Shimron has already established himself in the Windies’ middle order while Oshane Thomas has touted to be the next great West Indian Pacer. Thomas has the knack of ripping the ball in it at 150 kmph & Hetmeyer can switch gears when needed.

Hetmeyer in ODI’s – Matches: 25, Runs: 899, Average: 40.86

Oshane Thomas: Matches: 9, Wickets: 15, S/R: 22.8
